Asian Geographic photo contest finalist!

Hi guys!

It was a great honour to be selected as a finalist in Asia Without Borders, Asia's leading photo competition organised by award-winning magazine Asian Geographic!

The competition boasts 9,000 entries from over 30 countries and this year, underwater photographer Brian Skerry and world-renowned photographer Steve McCurry was involved as first round judges with a live judging grand finale held on 07 December 2012.

Ritual colours by gnohz

This was taken at an annual festival in Bumthang, Bhutan and depicts their colorful culture through their dances and elaborate costumes. The pace of the dance was rather fast and a high shutter speed was chosen taking into account the close-up nature of the shot, otherwise some blurred areas in the dress or hands would have been desired to show some sense of movement.

This is also something quite different from what I have been shooting. It's definitely more hard work finding angles, observing split-second actions zooming by and adjusting camera exposures all at the same time, but when you get a shot you want, it's exhilarating. That's the beauty of photography, I feel.

Dear all

This time round I need some help from everyone! :w00t:
I have submitted a mini album to Nikon's website. Please spend just a few seconds of your time to take and look and if you think it's worthy and deserves a vote, I hope you can click "Like" or "Share" to nominate it as "Album of the Week"! :w00t:

The link is I Am The Colour of Life

I appreciate every single vote. Thanks so much!! :tighthug:
Hi guys!

I've been away for some time! Have been quite busy after I decided to turn full-time to photography. Work has been satisfying, and it's really great to be able to meet people from all walks of life!
Hope things didn't change too much around here. But in fact, I did drop by every now and then, only that I didn't have opportunities to interact as much as I wanted to! I'm very sorry that I might not be able to respond to everyone's fave or comment like I have always been doing, largely due to the workload...

Anyway, here's a little update on what's happening in my little world :D

-Really, REALLY happy to be published (finally) in print in the Photography For Beginners magazine! And it's a 2-page spread! I can't believe it... :faint:

-As for work, it's been mainly events such as corporate events, graduation ceremonies, weddings etc. Yes, I finally shot my first full day Actual Day wedding! Actually I was quite nervous about what to expect the unexpected, but I guess it all adds to the fun of the job :D

-I was lucky to be involved in nation-wide event shoots such as the Singapore Youth Festival 2012. These shoots took place at least 8 hours a day with little rest in between and were really draining... but I got to meet other photographers and it has definitely been an awesome experience!

-If you have been following me on Facebook and/or Twitter, you would probably have seen the images and blog posts that I posted up. For those who missed, I finally got around to sorting and editing work from my previous trips! You can read about my Northern Thailand trip where we we tried to do things differently by visiting some out-of-the-way places to get a unique local experience.

-I've also been to a few photography seminars by veterans in the industry such as wedding photographers, travel photographers, portrait photographers, and it's good to be inspired by their personality and the work they do! Sometimes I feel that I'm moving and l learning too slowly, really need to push myself more and more!!

Lastly, I can't do features for the time being as I'm back to a free account ^^;
Glad to be back and I'll be bringing more work for your viewing pleasure (and not viewing agony I hope)! :XD:
PS: It's a long entry, and I know that not being able to post thumbnails and images tire the eyes really quickly... :(

What have I been up to?

Hi all!

Just an update on what's been going on lately

I have uploaded a new deviation Behind the mask. This genre of photography was the "trying something different" I mentioned about in my previous journal entry. I hope I did not scare anyone away with my amateurish attempt :D :faint:
Anyway, this is it ---> Behind the mask
Feel free to let me know what you think! Definitely there's more to come as I have been for a couple more of shoots :w00t:

As for other stuff, I have been busy with assisting other photographers, shooting for events, products (food, wedding dresses etc) and work hours have been loooong (eg 12 hours/day on a stretch). Literally I have been running all around the area meeting clients, delivering images and meeting deadlines. And from now I will be involved in a Canon event for the entire week, including weekends! I wonder how long I will be able to keep up with this hectic schedule of mine :D

One of the interesting events have been to assist an advertising/fashion photographer during her workshop. Watching a professional model work is simply amazing and awe-inspiring! The way they respond to the camera is simply beyond words. Something like a "robot", but I don't think you know what I mean anyway...Check this out for some behind-the-scenes! We all love behind-the-scenes!! :D
Behind the scenes at Jasmine Vincent's photography workshop

I have been very honoured to be invited for a guest post at Singh-Ray Filters blog! I described how I used graduated neutral filters to achieve optimal exposures in-camera here ---> Deng Weizhong learned to balance bright skies with the shadowed foregrounds for more natural images

Hi dearies!

First of all, thank you for all the comments and favs over the past week. I'm really overwhelmed and touched that my work is being appreciated
Hope that all of you had a good Valentine's day. I'm in the midst of clearing some backlog...but! I'd like to try something different.

Long story short, as you know 100% of all the work that I have posted is related to nature and landscapes. I'm very, VERY grateful that you like them, and I still have many, many more to share! But I would also like to try posting something quite different, meaning a different genre of photography from what I have been doing up till now.

I'm sure some will encourage me to do anything I like since it's my page! But I would still like to know more about my watchers and how you will respond, since you might have been used to what I have shown over the past few months. Definitely I do not want to scare all of you away! :D

Anyway, here's the poll, and do let me know what you think! Would you like to see some radically different work from me?

Having said that, it's feature time

Hi everyone! It's been some time since I last wrote a journal, but believe me I have been busy :)

Just some latest updates.
Just very recently, I have been officially accepted as a Getty Images contributor! Just very briefly, in the photography world, Getty Images is something like an online stock image library. It's definitely an honour to be accepted. Another small step forward for me yay! :) :w00t:

My work was published on Cromoart. Check it out for some images not yet on deviantART (but they will sooner or later ^^; )

And, I'm excited to say that my work is going to be published in a magazine soon! It'll be my first printed publication and I can't wait! The exact date is not yet out, but if things go smoothly, I should be able to see it in March. I'll update again when the time comes

Festive season

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 18, 2012, 2:29 AM
Truphotos l Blog l Facebook l Twitter l Flickr

The festive season is coming soon for people who celebrate the Lunar New Year! This year it'll be on 23 Jan. It's not very far away from Christmas and the New Year in the Gregorian calendar so I have been in a holiday mood since December! :D It'll be a period of lots of eating good food and getting red packets from relatives again :squee:

I have been busy with some backlog for the past week, and still am! But I'm enjoying every minute of it  And I thought that it has been some time since I last uploaded a deviation, so now here it is! Hope you like it

Heart of the city by gnohz

Other recent happenings:
There's a commercial shoot coming up in February, nothing major, just a small event. But I have to come up with some concepts for the client, and I'm looking around and identifying some works from other artists for some inspiration.

Sometimes, despite trying very hard, some self-doubt surfaces when I try to do something or make a decision. I think there is a lot of negativity in this world such that even before we start on something, we tend to think about the bad things that MIGHT happen. Someone once said, instead of thinking "what if something bad happens", let's try to look on the positive side by thinking "what if something bad DOES NOT happen"!

I think we just need to keep the determination and strive forward. Here is a blog entry which I wrote about a few days back. Read it for some inspiration and motivation ---> Keep going and never give up

Oh, one more thing, have you heard the Golden Globes theme song composed by Yoshiki? There's a short version on youtube so check it out. It's so beautiful with a really catchy orchestral melody that I can't get it out of my head now. For those wondering, Yoshiki is the leader of legendary rock band X Japan

And thank you all my dear friends and watchers once again for your kindest support!

Yup, First light is featured in a journal over at #HighQualityArt!:…

Also, I just realised that Rays of hope and Seal on iceberg are also featured at #TheFavouriteShowcase: thefavouriteshowcase.deviantar…

In the end, I did not win the poll over at #SunriseAndSunsetClub but still I would like to thank all my voters for their kind support as always. At least I got the 2nd place! View the results here: sunriseandsunsetclub.deviantar…

Yesterday, I met a friend whom I've not contacted for 10 years! Together we went to recce a location (abandoned houses) and found out that it could be used for very good concept shoots! I can't wait for these shoots to be organised :D

I'm very glad to see that finally, one of my works is featured in a poll for a sunrise/sunset contest over at #SunriseAndSunsetClub!

Although I don't think I'll win because it's not a direct representation of a sunrise, I'll still elated to see it there :squee:

Anyway, I shan't bother you all with such a minor issue on Christmas (although it's night over here and Christmas is going to be over :D )

But still, to all my dear friends and watchers, have a great holiday season!!

Like I mentioned in my first journal entry, something terrible, terrible happened last weekend.

I received news that one of my close relatives was swept away by the typhoon, Washi, which rampaged over the Southern islands in the Philippines. Apparently, he was directly located around the main river, working up on a crane or something, when disaster struck...Until now, he has not been found... This was so sudden, and came as a shock to everyone. We are hoping everyday for a miracle.

This incident made me realise again how fragile human beings are. And made me recall my past memories of another friend and relative.

I will try to live with love, with dreams.........and forever with Tears

Hi my dear friends!

Looking back at my gallery, some of my first deviations on DA were First light, Mount Robson, and were submitted in the first week of Dec. It's been more than a week since then.

Maybe some of you are wondering what the title means. Although as all of you can see that my account has been here for 3 years (!), I forgot all about it and was inactive all the while. It was only until the past week that I decided to start my journey on DA.
I'm not sure what was the reason, but maybe because I was feeling down recently and was looking for an outlet... Something terrible happened, but that'll be for another post...

But all I can say is, my first week in DA has been simply great! I realised that the community here is really friendly, and they help out one another too, so thank you very much for making my start here in DA a great one :)

With that, a very happy holiday season to everyone and I look forward to interacting with all of you! :huggle:

Argh...journal skins require premium membership... X_X Is it possible to edit the default journal skin by ourselves and use it?

EDIT: Ok I found out that only premium members are allowed to use skins or make custom changes...
